Born Digital : How to Connect with the Digital Generation

The first computer I grew up with was bulky, heavy boxes in different shapes, has limited function and usually fixed in one location. Now, the computer got itself nicknames like “laptop” and “palmtop.” Modern computers come in different sizes, colors and designs depending on the price and the personality of its user. It became a convergence of functions, a calendar, calculator, camera, radio to name a few. Technology found a way to increase its mobility. More than the physical appearance and physical spaces it occupy, there is this so called “Digital Space” where those who were “Born Digital” connect.
According to Dr. Calvin Chong, Academic Dean of School of Theology in Singapore Bible College, “The 21st century has seen the creation of new electronic habitats extended beyond mere physical space. Today digital spaces are established part of the ecology of clicks and mortar” spaces where commerce, business work, communication, education and entertainment are transacted.”
The Digital space is a place where people create, connect, socialize and build a sense of togetherness with people across the world. It provides a venue where people can freely express themselves. In Dr. Chong's lecture during the Global Consultation on Music and Missions, he stated that there are many creative ways now to engage with the digital generation. Parenting, pastoring, Christian education, outreach and missions can be done with the right communication tools that these generation are using.
In order to connect with the Digital Generation communication tools should be emotionally engaging, artistically appealing, collaborative, interactive, thought provoking, meaningful and significant. Dr. Chong shared some of the few creative sites where the Born Digital build their sense of self identify and lifestyle choices. Some of the examples are these free web-based image generators that allow people to be creative by creating interesting images that can covey a message.
